Left Media Bias bigger than i realized. No matter how you measure (print media, online, page views, paid subscribers, followers, etc) US media leans heavily left, to an extent that surprised me. Most ways I tried back-of-the napkin math have right + right-leaning news sources being below 10%… and even the most generous assessments that include lost of neutral/other outlets still have left + left-leaning above 50% (meaning 5:1 liberal to conservative is the lowest estimate i could find).

    Context

The US is pretty evenly split in terms of the two major parties:
    > 45% of U.S. adults Republican-ish, 44% Democrat-ish Gallup 2022

    Some sources

    • Allsides Here’s Allsides review
their media bias on Allsides.com here’s the site’s own assessment of its own bias
    • Googling the top 25 most-subscribed news channels in the United States, and
    • Even the more left leaning LLMS can’t help but point out this as a fact of modern media.

    Takeaways

    • First, this gives me empathy for Republicans. Many American conservatives feel like the underdog, regardless of how much power or influence they yield, because in a very real way, they’re not represented in a substantial part of the public narrative making machine—the media—proportionally. The perception of bias is true despite their being popular conservative outlets with sizable audiences, and as a result the left has influence on public opinion.Impact on Public Trust (but also how come Republicans aren’t better at getting media subscribers?)

    • Second, how come Republicans, who are stereotypically thought of us as having more business acumen or money or something, are getting so handily beaten in the media?

    • Third, I try not to get involved in politics because I’m scared of loosing connection or turning people off of the value of relatefulness because of my takes, even if they’re nuanced. We’re very good at otherizing people and forgetting to look at nuances. I’m certain I lack nuance. I don’t want a difference of political opinion to get in the way of our connecting. I started writing up this for the TTT email (which I ended up deciding not to send) but I realized others are deeply esconced in politics and way smarter and more educated in the field than I, so I decided to not go there. But here on uptrusting.com I think it’s a cool opporutnity to test; could also be a nice road to empathy, or self-empathy, depending on our identifications.

For the record, I avoid literally all of these sources except substack and X. I mostly can't stand the news and I'd rather opt-in to the bias by picking up a book of someone whose thinking I want to be in dialogue with, and consider deeply (whether or not I agree); I find all...

"Escaping Social Media Hell" - UpTrust on Embodiment Coaching Podcast (Podcast #3). on apple / spotify / embodiment site

This is the one I did last week, that y'all's feedback helped me prep for. I started a little stilted but I think we catch a flow pretty quickly, and in any case we get to the point a lot faster.

I think this is probably the most approachable of the 3 so far, but I'll be curious what y'all think. Mark does a great job asking pointed questions, and somewhere in the middle it finally 'clicks' and he gets pretty excited about it.

Renee I took inspiration from your suggestion and flipped it—offered at the beginning he could coach me :) He didn't take me up on it but i think it was one of a few pieces that set the right tone.

Hey! I’ve only listened to half of the podcast so far, but this is your best one yet! You’re so clear! I liked how Mark asked specific, devil’s-advocate-type questions. It called you to give more thorough answers, and I could imagine more about how the algorithms will work....

Would love y'all's feedback on podcasts: here's number #1 . Part of our plan for growing is for me to go on a series of increasingly popular podcasts. I feel great about doing relateful podcasts, but feel like I still need a lot of practice for UpTrust. here's the first one:

"Solving Social Media with Jordan Myska Allen" (i don't get to pick the titles)

    • Youtube: https://youtu.be/i2MSY1K9wTc
    • Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/solving-social-media-with-jordan-myska-allen/id1714481300?i=1000692941322
    • Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6XFLyfHXj7S0OnwdweFfab

I would love any kind of feedback. What works for you? What doesn't? Any specific phrases stick out as good/bad? What's the most boring? Most interesting? Surprising? etc

Great job, Jordan! You ooze charisma. Loved: The point about X and FB having an unconscious incentive structure, and there being no bad guys is brilliant because it shifts energy away from finger-pointing that can be put toward making things better....

Trust involves curiosity more than certainty:

This kind of related to my post about the cosmos being more a communion of subjects than a collection of objects. I mentioned in another post that I’m working with the Art of Alignment (AoA) team in Boulder....

Wisdom Enter(tr)ainment: . If you are old enough to remember the Seinfeld show, you may remember the episode where George Castanza needs to read a complicated book, but he’s addicted to audio books to make it interesting.

We’ve entered a new era with NotebookLM from Google. I was curious about this tool, and realized I had a perfect test case. I moved to Boulder, Colorado to work with Patty Beach on building an app for Alignment, based on her book:

    https://www.amazon.com/Art-Alignment-Practical-Inclusive-Leadership/dp/1544516711

Alignment might seem like a simple concept, but it actually takes quite a bit of experience navigating nuance to achieve in a team of diverse people.

I’ve tried to explain why it’s tricky, and why this process can make a huge difference in people getting out of their own way when attempting to collaborate. So I uploaded a PDF copy of the book to NotebookLM and hit generate podcast and 10 minutes later, I have a 20 minute podcast that has done a better job than I ever could have. Check it out:

(I sent to podcast to Patty, and she was also blown away).

I agree—I’d rather hear a David Swedlow segment any day!

Now that I’ve heard a few of these I can hear the auto-generated structures and they’re way less compelling to me.
